1978 3-Move Nationals in Murfreesboro, TN

The ACF 31st Nationals 3-Move Tournament held in Murfreesboro, TN on June 9 thru 15 with a smashing record entrants of a 168 players! This is the largest National Checker Tournament to date in both attendance and prize fund.  32 Masters, 79 Majors, and 52 Minors. Total funds raised $17,214.00 with over $8,000 prize fund payout. This was the heydays of Tennessee checkers under Tom Steagall. Clint Pickard drove out taking 4 others: Ray Brooks, Wade Holder, Charlie Miller, and Howard Amos.  They had their picture taken with Marion Tinsley.  Marion Tinsley won the Masters and making this his 6th US National Championship. He's tally of: 6W-0L-2D and Elbert Lowder took 2nd with a record of: 5W-1L (Tinsley) -2D.  Majors Champion was Les Balderson, and Minors Champion was Joe Schwartz. Checkers Challenger competed in Minors. Tom Steagall a wealthy farmer from the Murfreesboro area sponsored this tournament with the help of many other active Tennessee Checker Association members.
